Five Pop Bands that Won’t Give You a Cavity
For everyone out there that hates Miley, bashes Bieber and refuses to listen to the JoBros, not all pop music is mainstream and not all of it is Disney-fied. There are some really good pop acts out there that are not entirely sugary-sweet. Need proof? Keep reading.
All Time Low – Singer and guitarist Alex Gaskarth, guitarist Jack Barakat, bassist Zack Merrick and drummer Rian Dawson produce sassy party songs with a splash of punk. Their music is fun and their videos are hilarious. They have been featured on MTV and movie soundtracks for Jennifer’s Body and Alice in Wonderland, but they are not considered mainstream and are still not as widely known as they deserve to be. They recently released a live DVD documentary of a 2009 show in New York and all their music is available for purchase on iTunes.
Never Shout Never – Never Shout Never (a.k.a Christofer Drew) has the sweetest voice and the sweetest sound to his music, though he isn’t afraid to get angry. Singing about everything from his parents recent divorce to losing his virginity, Chris’ simple songs are beautiful and fun to listen too. He came out with this first full-length album last year, but Chris had already released countless EPs. You can catch him this summer on Warped Tour and pre-order his new album Harmony on the Never Shout Never website.
Stephen Jerzak – Singer, songwriter, guitarist, and ukulele player Stephen Jerzak, is just about the cutest thing to ever come out of Wisconsin. Recently signed to Universal Republic, Stephen recently released his first single signed to the label, She Said, featuring Leighton Meester. Very in touch with his fans, Stephen frequently holds video chat parties on Stickam with his band and close friends. He always makes an effort to talk to the people who support his music; his fans.
The Ready Set – One man band, Indian native, Jordan Witzigreuter is the face of the Ready Set. The energetic pop music he makes is dance worthy and downright fabulous. Having just released his latest full-length, I’m Alive, I’m Dreaming, Jordan wrapped up a few shows in Texas and Oklahoma. His video for “Love Like Woe,” the first single off of I’m Alive, I’m Dreaming, is available on iTunes along with the rest of his music.
A Rocket to the Moon – Vocalist and guitarist Nick Santino, guitarist Justin Richards, bassist Eric Halvorsen and drummer Andrew Cook make great pop music together. A Rocket to the Moon have been featured in Alternative Press Magazine and are currently on Warped Tour performing all acoustic sets. Next they are heading out on another tour after Warped Tour ends. Clearly these guys are busy, but not too busy to give their fans some great music. Their latest album, On Your Side, is filled with love songs that will tug the heartstrings off all who listen.
Hopefully, all you mainstream pop music haters out there have found the light and realized that pop music can be great and maybe mainstream isn’t evil. Finding a lesser known band that makes great music always helps to sweeten the deal.
