Leaving a Lasting Impression

It’s that time of the year again. As summer sales begin and school quickly approaches it’s hard not to think about what the year will bring. With new academic challenges, budding love, and fading friendships -will this year be unforgettable?

As thoughts of school tickle your brain, think about the mark you’ll make. Making your mark starts a first impression. First impressions are lasting impressions so make your mark be your brand. Seemingly tricky, this is one thing you can’t leave home on your way to the world of academia. Follow these three easy steps to ensure your first impression is a good one.

1. Perception is reality- It’s a hard pill to swallow, but more often than not what people see is what they believe. Yes, people are shallow. However, knowing this be prepared to put your best foot forward. This doesn’t mean act like the queen of England every second of every day, but it does mean be cognizant of the message you’re sending out with your clothes, language, and attitude. Your professors will not care if you’re a brilliant student if all they can think about is your stained clothes and ripped shirt. Dress for the part you want to play.

2. Birds of a feather flock together- The saying is old, but nonetheless true! Be careful of the company you keep. You’re often making a first impression without even knowing it. Not to be creepy, but someone is always watching you. Hanging out with the class cheater or school trouble maker might not be the best move if you’re hoping to have a good first impression, with anybody let alone a professional figure. As unfair as it may seem we as humans often define each other by the relationships we have with others. That being said be sure you’re flying and not following.

3. Be Your Own Brand- Nothing is as unforgettable as the uniqueness of another person. Impersonating and imitating are good ways to be forgotten and when it comes to making a good first impression you first must be remembered. Whatever you do be true to you. Don’t let society define your identity define it for yourself and you’ll be sure to make the lasting impression mentioned before.

Leaving that lasting impression isn’t always easy, but it’s far from impossible. People remember that which matters so make your presence meaningful. Don’t get caught up in the crowd, instead dare to be definitively different by being your own brand. As the unforgettable Nike says, “Just Do It!”
