Artist to Check Out: K. Michelle
Twenty-four year old K. Michelle, is one of Jive Records newest artists. Currently she’s promoting her second single, “I Just Can’t Do This,” which was written and produced by fellow Jive Recording artist, R. Kelly. As her music continues to gain airplay, Michelle is set to release her debut album, Pain Medicine, this fall.
K. Michelle is a native of Memphis, Tennessee and in an article on the official Jive website, she credits her hometown for giving her the toughness that can be heard throughout the album. On Pain Medicine, Michelle writes and co-produces every track. She also teams up with producers such as Salaam Remi, Drumma Boy, Elvis, Cool & Dre, Rico Love, Lil Ronnie, Platinum Brothers and Harvey Mason Jr.
Michelle’s journey towards a career in music was a little unusual. She earned a music scholarship at Florida A&M University, but soon decided to major in Biology with the intent of becoming a nurse. Not being a declared music major didn’t stop Michelle from continuing to work on her talent.
“My whole time at college I played the piano and sang,” she said. After finishing college, Michelle made singing her focus as she traveled to Asia with Memphis Orchestra Sound Fuzion as a singer. When she returned home, she tried working an office job. Once she realized it was not the career for her, she moved to Atlanta in hope of securing a record deal.
Two years later on during a trip to Jive’s New York offices, K. Michelle ran into MeMpHiTz, another Memphis native. Michelle became a part of his Hitz Committee Entertainment and a week later she received a deal after leaving an impression on the executives.
In addition to music, one other thing that K. Michelle cherishes is her five-year old son, Chase. With her new career in gear, she looks forward to building a life that the two of them can enjoy.
