Top-grossing Films of 2011
By Deidra Goggin
If you’re like me, you like knowing the results of a year’s past: best in fashion, top selling books, and top selling films. The year 2011 was a year of big movies and big box office results. Many of the films released in theaters made millions, but then there are those movies that made more millions. Let’s take a look at the top grossing movies of 2011.
1. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 $381,011,219
Yes, that’s a lot of numbers and money and ultimately the top-grossing movie of 2011. This Harry Potter film was the last one of the series, bringing this magical book and movies series to an end. Harry Potter fans showed their love for the Harry, Ron and Hermione by flocking to the theaters over and over again. This last movie follows the three back to Hogwarts to destroy Voldermort, ensuing a huge battle and displaying the excellent special effects in the film.
2. Transformers: Dark of the Moon $352,390,543
Who knew Transformers was so popular? This film came in second at the box office, but was one of the most talked about films of the year opening in the summer. Shia LaBeouf took on the role of Same Witwicky once again while focusing on the space race between the U.S.S.R. and the USA. Newcomer, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley replaces the “hot girl role” of Megan Fox, and actually does a pretty good job!
3. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 $279,897,264
This other book series turned into a film series always seems to be near the top as well when rounding out a movie year. It seems Edward and Bella just can’t stay out of trouble when it comes to their love. And then of course throw in drool-worthy Taylor Lautner and no one can stay away. The first part of Breaking Dawn shows Edward and Bella finally tying the knot, but throws in a twist when Bella becomes pregnant with a half human, half vampire baby. Guess we’ll have to wait for Part II to find out what happens!
Other top-grossing movies included The Hangover Part II at $254,464,305 and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides with $241,071,802.
