The Modern Metro Man
This week I want to talk about something that is dear and true to my heart. It’s what I want in life, what I dream about, what I long for. It’s not Steve Madden pumps, or Calvin Klein coats, or even Acqua di Gio by Giorgio Armani. No, the one thing that my life is simply not complete without is a metrosexual man by my side. To quote the NYT article “Metrosexuals Come Out” about these beautiful male specimens, “They’re all low-slung jeans and working out with six packs and more hair product than I’ve ever used in my life, and they smell better than your mother on Easter.” Are you sold yet?
Most people don’t pay much head to men’s fashion because, well, there simply isn’t a huge market for it. You just don’t see men flocking to Bloomingdale’s when there is a sale. Most guys either, a. are dressed by their wife/mom, b. wear the same outfit day in and day out, or c. try to put together outfits and end up looking silly. That is your average straight male; love ‘em or hate ‘em. But there is another breed of males that do care about clothing and can dress themselves: metros.
The word metrosexual is derived from metropolitan, where you are likely to spot these lovely men. Still not quite sure what metro means? Put simply, a man is branded metrosexual when he embraces his feminine side; he enjoys fashion, takes pride in his looks, and is sensitive and sophisticated. You may think I am describing a stereotypical gay man, but a metro man also retains his masculine traits; he works out, loves steak, follows sports, and most importantly, is straight.
In addition to being every women’s dream and delicious to look at, the rising popularity of metrosexuality has a profound impact on the fashion industry. Metro men are more willing to try edgier fashions and spend more on clothes. This new market has allowed designers to branch out into more creative menswear. Some of the most influential menswear designers today are Alexander Wang, Calvin Klein, and Louis Vuitton. Today’s market is a mix of innovative, fashion-forward clothes and traditional menswear. Hopefully menswear will continue to grow as a market, but the real question is whether it can ever rise to the magnitude of womenswear. Only time will tell.
Metrosexual males are simply wonderful. They provide women with the best of both worlds. On one hand, they will be all rugged muscle and protect their woman. And then they will go to the mall willingly and actually give a valid opinion on clothing. Can you see why I am obsessed? To top it all off, they are revolutionizing the fashion industry and widening potential markets. So head yourself over to the nearest urban area and get to scouting. Hurry, because supplies are limited and in hot demand this season!
