All of you Coachella fans have been sucked into the phenomenon of Coachella, and so the countdown begins. But first, what exactly is Coachella? I, myself had to do a bit of research to understand the culture behind Coachella and why fans and celebrities alike flock every year to the festival. Coachella is an annual music and arts festival which was organized by Goldenvoice and is held every year at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California (Coachella Valley, hence the name Coachella!)
The event consists of multiple genres of music including rock, hip hop, electronic music, indie and also sculptured artwork. Wikipedia explains that bands at Coachella play at different locations throughout the location continuously. There are six stages and a smaller dome which was added in 2006. This year will be different from past festivals because this year Coachella will take place over two weekends. The first weekend will be on April 13-15 and on April 20-22.
According to Wikipedia, the history behind Coachella dates back to 1993, when the rock band Pearl Jam performed for 25,000 fans who watched the band perform on the lawn of the free rock festival Empire Polo Club. About six years later, in October of 1999, the first Coachella music festival was born. Since then the festival has been a hit. Artists such as Prince, Madonna, Beastie Boys, Coldplay, Radiohead, The Cure and Red Hot Chili Peppers have performed over the years to name a few. This year the line- up includes multiple artists including A$ap Rocky, Azealia Banks, Calvin Harris, Datsik, Beats Antique, AWOLNATION, Frank Ocean, Dragonette and Florence and the Machines. (You can check out the full line-up at www.Coachella.com)
Fans who have been lucky enough to score tickets to the festival have the option to camp on-site at the location by either staying in their cars or in tents, off-site camping in RVs and on campgrounds or they can stay at a nearby hotel. The higher ups and organizers of the festival have made a vital decision to team up with Global Inheritance to help reduce their carbon footprint; such as encouraging fans to carpool to the festival. They made carpooling into a game which they cleverly named “Carpoolchella”, where those who participate in carpooling to the event can win prizes. For example, if you carpool with four or more people you’re eligible to win VIP tickets to Coachella for life, all access guess passes, VIP wristbands photo passes, 50 dollars worth of Coachella merchandise vouchers, golf cart ride to front entrance and a date with skip.
To enter, participants write “carpoolchella” on an 8×11 piece of paper and put it on the dashboard of their car and have to arrive anytime before 2PM on Sunday. At random times, those donning the sign on their dashboard will be questioned and may win prizes. For those who have tickets we envy you! But have a great time for us!
