Make Your Own Denim Shorts This Summer

Make Your Own Denim Shorts This Summer
By Pilar Orellana

It is no secret that the hottest summer trend is denim shorts. From adding studs and lace embellishments to bleach and distressing your shorts this is without a doubt the best DIY around.

You have seen these trendy bottoms from top bloggers, celebs, and designers like Alice and Olivia. But why spend your week’s paycheck on a pair of these designer denims when the secret is you can do it yourself? You may have already hit up YouTube or fellow bloggers on how to create these bedazzled bottoms. All you need is a few materials and a couple easy steps and you’re ready to rock this hot statement.

Step 1: Turn normal jeans to distressed shorts.

Take a pair of your old rundown jeans or even use mom jeans for a retro high wasted fit. Scissors, sand paper, and tweezers will be your best friend in this creation.

Put on the jeans and mark where you want the shorts to cut off. Cut an inch lower so you have extra length left for the distressed bottom.

Sand paper the bottom of the pockets to have a run down look and then cut a slit where you can creat a distressed hole.

Turn your shorts inside out and with your tweezers, pull out the blue thread of that slit until you only see white thread.

Finally throw it in the washer and you’ll have yourself a new pair of distressed denim shorts.

Step 2: Bleach it.

All you need is bleach, studs, and lace fabric. Depending on how much you want your shorts to be bleached, dunk about half of it in a bowl of bleach and let it sit for about 20 minutes ( the longer it sits the whiter your shorts will be).

Let it dry for about 30 minutes then throw it in the washer to take off the excess bleach.

Step 3: Add some flare.

Adding studs is the fun part. You can create any kind of design you want from triangles to a cross. This will give you that rocker inspired look.

For a boho look, sew on a lace trim to the bottom of your shorts. With the left over pieces, cover one of the pockets with lace to finish it off. You may also use washable fabric glue instead.

There you go ladies! Three simple steps to creating your customized denim shorts. You are going to have everyone wanting a pair!
