Mother Nature Says This is Your Most Beautiful Time of the Month
Guys may cringe at any mention of the term “menstrual cycle,” but they are more aware of what’s going on inside the female reproductive system then they realize. Nope — we’re not talking about your period nor the PMS sirens that alert your boyfriend of its appearance. We’re referring to a more pleasant time of month — ovulation. Despite their determination to remain blissfully ignorant, Mother Nature has found a way to keep guys in the loop. Research shows that a woman’s physical appearance gets a significant boost during ovulation, and conscious of it or not, men take notice.
Perhaps the most drastic way that a woman’s appearance is altered during ovulation, is that her face and body become more symmetrical (an inherent sign of good health and genes) due to the changing shape of soft tissues. This temporary enhancement also takes effect on a woman’s breasts, which are often slightly asymmetrical.
When a woman is at her most fertile she also has a more radiant complexion. Psychologist Dr. Lisa DeBruine of the University of Aberdeen shared this interesting information on an episode of Oprah entitled The Laws of Attraction. “We’re not entirely clear why there’s this difference, but we think that the women might look healthier, have a bit of a healthier glow when they are ovulating.”
The pitch of a woman’s voice is also higher during ovulation, which according to scientific speculation, allows a man to unconsciously register that she is fertile. This corresponds with a study published in the Journal of Evolutionary Psychology which reports evidence that voice pitch serves as a sexual signal. Regardless of where a woman is in her cycle, she will modulate her voice pitch when speaking to a man she finds attractive.
Another powerful way that a woman becomes more attractive during her peak fertility involves her body scent. When a woman is ovulating she produces copulins, a scent that attracts men. Researchers hypothesize that the smell of copulins makes a man’s testosterone levels rise.
While it seems counterintuitive, one final reason that a woman appears more beautiful during ovulation, is that she has lower self-esteem. Researchers have found that women feel more self-conscious when they are ovulating, which leads them to spend more time primping and improving their appearance. This extra maintenance compounds the natural beauty enhancements that occur at peak fertility. Behaviorally, fertile women also tend to be more flirtatious, wearing tighter clothing and revealing more skin.
