Heels vs. Flats: How and When to Choose

Paper or plastic? Credit or debit? Soup or salad? A woman make tons of inconsequential choices throughout the day, but one decision that’s worth thinking through is her footwear selection. Wearing heels 24/7 might seem attractive, but in reality is not at all sensible. Here’s a guide that details when heels are a must, and when it’s better to throw on your favorite flats.

When to Wear Heels

To an interview–They help improve your posture, which gives you an heir of confidence. Most interviews don’t require much walking or standing, so you shouldn’t have to worry about your feet getting tired. Slip a pair of heels into your bag and change out of your flats in your car or in the cab.

On a blind date–Heels can be super sexy, and will signal to the guy that you put thought into your appearance. It’s important, of course, to use your discression on this one. Most blind dates take shape in the form of dinner or a movie, or something else low-impact. If you know you’ll be hiking or biking in Central Park, obviously opt for more sensible footwear.

To a work-related event–When you’re representing something greater than yourself, it’s important to remember that people at the event will associate your image with your company. If you look polished and put-together, there’s a better chance the people you rub elbows with will remember you, and therefore remember your employer. Here’s one situation when it’s smart to take one for the team. Your feet can rest at your desk tomorrow.

When to Wear Flats

To a sporting event–Whether it’s professional basketball, little league soccer, or anything in between, there’s no reason to wear heels to the game. You’re likely to be traversing sticky stadium bleachers or a dirt field, so flats are smarter choice. Girls who wear heels to a sporting event can give off a “high maintenance” vibe, and stick out like sore thumbs among fans in jerseys and foam fingers.

Shopping–Some girls think wearing heels while shopping makes them look classy and wealthy, but even the most posh boutique owners don’t buy the act. Most celebrities opt for a laid back, casual look, even when perusing Rodeo Drive. Unless you’re Jessica Simpson or J-Lo, wearing heels also probably wears down your endurance, leaving you exhausted after just a few stores.

The airport–If Kim Kardashian can do it, you should too, right? Wrong. While jet-setting in sky-high heels can seem glamorous, it’s ill-advised. Commercial travel often requires a ton of walking and waiting on security lines. Lugging around your Louis Vuitton suitcases while hunched over and limping is definitely not glamorous.
