Boost Your Resume with a Fall Internship
By Sora Hwang
The end of July is quickly approaching. That means August is going to fly by and before you know it, you’re out of the office of your summer internship and back in the classroom listening to your professors go over the syllabus. Being back in the classroom after a valuable summer of aiding your career may seem counterproductive.
To most—or more accurately, all—students’ dismay, classes are a must, but that does not mean that the internships and jobs have to stop. It is important to continue gaining experience and building that impressive resume to one day show to your future boss at the dream job… and get hired.
Summer internships help students gain new connections, in addition to the new experience. Now, there are more people to add to the list of references and, hopefully, they only have positive things to say. Going into future interviews, having a summer internship shows that rather than sitting around idly, you did something productive with dedication and hard work.
It’s important to either continue with the same internship or find a new internship during the fall semester. Unfortunately, by the time people get around to even thinking about it, deadlines have passed and it’s too late. That’s why if you want to secure a fall internship, you must start looking now.
Even if you think it’s too soon, you may be surprised to learn that a deadline is already right around the corner and you could have missed it if you waited just a week longer to start your search.
Show your enthusiasm by applying early to the companies around your area that you can really see yourself working for. An internship is not just about the student getting experience, so pick something where you can truly contribute your talents to the organization. Fall internships can only positively enhance your resume, so when you get some free time at the desk, start your searches right away.
