Five Easy Steps To Creating the Perfect Topknot

Five Easy Steps To Creating the Perfect Topknot
By Jessica Milter

Say hello to one of this season’s hottest hairstyles: the topknot. This trend is so popular and great because you can make it what you want. You can create a chic and effortless look or a sleek ballerina-esque updo. No matter how you choose to wear it, we’ve got the breakdown for creating this edgy new hairstyle that’s at the top of every celebrity’s hair-do list.

(Just a sidenote: because the bun has to sit high on your head, this look works best for those with shoulder-length hair or longer!)

Step 1: Flip your head upside down, gathering all of your hair together and secure into a ponytail with a clear elastic or one that matches the color of your hair. How tight or loose your want to make it is up to you. A sleek bun a la Kim Kardashian will take a little more gel and combing but an effortless bohemian look like Nicole Richie’s calls for a lighter hand and not as many products. If you’re battling some frizz in the hair that’s not in the ponytail, apply your regular anti-frizz products and hairspray when combing through to make the ponytail.

Step 2: If your hair is straighter and more fine, think about teasing the hair in the ponytail to get some added volume and va va voom when you create your bun. Thicker, more wavy hair can skip this step.

Step 3: Now wrap your hair around the ponytail to make the bun. Secure it with some bobby pins, but remember to crisscross them so the hair doesn’t go anywhere. For a tighter hold, secure the bun by tying a hairband around it.

Step 4: Finish off your beautiful creation by spraying a liberal amount of hairspray to keep everything in place. This will help to tame flyaways and create that high-fashion “I just came off the runway” look we’re going for.

Step 5: Rock it out!
