The Most Important Meal of the Day, Explained
We’ve all heard it: “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.” However, very few know just how integral it really is to everyday life. Breakfast provides you with the fuel you need to kick start your day and keeps you focused on important tasks at hand.
According to WebMD, skipping breakfast in the morning not only hinders your ability to complete even simple tasks, like cleaning or driving, but it also manifests itself in behavioral problems in children. If a child skips breakfast, they are more likely to skip other meals and opt for sugary snacks instead to satiate themselves. This creates an unhealthy shift in their diets which can lead to physical and intellectual problems in the future.
Forgoing the meal has also been proven to cause significant weight gain. WebMD states that fulfilling your body’s need for nutrients in the morning can prevent “starvation eating” later on in the day. The more satisfied you are throughout the day, the less likely you are to gorge yourself around lunch or dinnertime.
Caitlin Lavelle, a lifeguard at Sycamore Camp in Mahopac, N.Y. says that breakfast is the most important meal for her because it keeps her focused on the task at had.
“I need to be alert. There are a lot of campers swimming in front of me; if I’m not alert, one of them can go under,” Lavelle explains.
Lavelle said a lot of lifeguards she works with eat very little—if anything—for breakfast. This is when potential dangers can become a reality.
“One time, a lifeguard I worked with didn’t eat breakfast, and his attention span didn’t seem to be as long as it usually is. A little girl decided to swim to the deep dock without her buddy and went under. It was one minute, one very long minute, until another lifeguard on duty noticed her and dove in to rescue the camper in distress.”
Lavelle says she believes people, no matter what kind of job they hold, should always remember how essential the first meal of the day is to our lives.
“The importance of breakfast seems silly, but honestly it can make or break how people carry out their jobs throughout the day.”
Make sure not to skip out on breakfast in the mornings before class or school and you’ll feel more alert and awake.
